A worker was killed at New Gold’s Rainy River open-pit mine, northwest of Fort Frances, early on July 24.
In a news release, the Toronto gold company said an employee was operating a piece of equipment in the pit at the time they were fatally injured.
In extending regrets, New Gold said operations are temporarily suspended as an investigation is underway. The company said it is co-operating with local authorities.
“The thoughts of management are with the family, friends and colleagues who have been impacted by this tragic incident,” the company said in the release. “The company will provide additional information as appropriate.”
The mine is 65 kilometres northwest of Fort Frances, outside the community of Emo. Commercial production began in October 2017.
