Reading Time: 5 minutes

Modern Warfare 2 is nearly here, and we already know a great deal about returning maps, fan-favorite playlists, and all-new modes alike. Here’s a complete breakdown of everything to expect at launch with MW2’s full release.
Activision has now shown off most components of Modern Warfare 2 now with the campaign getting a special look, and the multiplayer Beta letting fans get their first hands-on sessions in. Thus, we already know a great deal on what to expect for the final build.
The full launch on October 28 is drawing ever closer and Infinity Ward has already revealed a range of new content to get us excited for the release.
From an assortment of brand new game modes, to a handful of returning maps, alongside the staples in each annual release, there’s plenty arriving in the upcoming installment.
Here’s a full rundown of every confirmed map and mode for Modern Warfare 2 thus far, along with a number of likely inclusions.

Confirmed Modern Warfare 2 game modes
Invasion
Invasion is a 32v32 deathmatch played on Ground War maps with AI. The mode runs similarly to Team Deathmatch, as players earn team points by eliminating enemies. Vehicles are available in this game mode.
The team with the most points at the end of the allotted time wins.
Prisoner Rescue
Among the new additions in Modern Warfare 2 is the Prisoner Rescue playlist. Taking heavy inspiration from the likes of Rainbow Six and CS:GO, this mode splits players across Attacking and Defending teams.
The goal of the Attackers is to either eliminate all Defenders, or escort two hostages to safety. For Defenders, it’s simply a matter of staying alive and keeping your prisoners locked down.
Knockout
As the name implies, Knockout is a unique mode in Modern Warfare 2 that gives teams just one life to prove themselves. Similar to Prisoner Rescue above, each player in Knockout has just one life per round, but can be revived after going down.
Rather than hostages though, the objective here is to either hold onto a package for a 60 seconds or wipe out the enemy team to win the round.
Gunfight
While we know for certain that Gunfight will feature in Modern Warfare 2, there’s currently no guarantee of when it may arrive.
Infinity Ward has addressed the aforementioned Knockout as a spiritual successor of sorts, but the original Gunfight is still set to return “at some point”, devs have confirmed.
ActivisionGunfight’s popular 2v2 gameplay is set to return at some point with Modern Warfare 2.
Team Deathmatch
As always, the standard Team Deathmatch mode is back for another year in Modern Warfare 2. If you’re looking for the simplest mode of them all, where the only goal is to kill, this is the playlist for you.
Domination
Domination returns once again in Modern Warfare 2 as the three-flag mode has been a staple since 2007. Objectives are placed in three locations across a given map. Controlling them provides points over time, the more your team controls, the more points you earn.
Hardpoint
Popular competitive game type Hardpoint is back in Modern Warfare 2. In this mode, teams fight for control over a single rotating objective. The first Hardpoint location often appears in the middle of a map before rotating through a number of preset positions at a regular interval.
Search & Destroy
The classic round-based mode is confirmed for Modern Warfare 2 as Search & Destroy appears for another year. In this popular mode, teams take turns attacking and defending two bomb sites. With no respawns, playing your life in each round is crucial.
Third Person Moshpit
Making a return for the first time since Modern Warfare 3 in 2011, third-person modes are back in Modern Warfare 2. Though they don’t exactly come in their own distinct playlists, just one third-person Moshpit was present in the Beta, mixing a handful of modes together with all players competing from a third-person POV.
Game modes to expect in Modern Warfare 2
Given it’s still early days yet, not every single game mode has been locked in for Modern Warfare 2. Though if you’re familiar with the CoD franchise, you’ll be well-versed with a number of staple playlists that feature almost every year without fail.
While we’re yet to hear confirmation on the following, it’s safe to assume the trend will continue in 2022 with many of the most popular game modes making a return.
Below is a quick look at what we expect to see on day one in Modern Warfare 2:
Free For All
Capture the Flag
Patrol
Kill Confirmed
Ground War
Every map in Modern Warfare 2
With Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward is set to divide maps into three distinct categories. Core Maps are your standard 6v6 designs. Battle Maps are larger spaces built for more sizable lobbies akin to Ground War.
While Large Battle Maps are the most expansive of them all, exclusively designed for the biggest modes on offer.
ActivisionModern Warfare 2’s maps are set to be divided into three unique categories based on size.
For the time being, it’s unclear just how many maps we should expect to see at launch in each category. Though we do already have some early details on a handful of new additions coming to Modern Warfare 2.
Core Maps in Modern Warfare 2
Valderas Museum
Set in Spain, Valderas Museum is a traditional CoD map boasting a four-lane layout. The map features indoor and outdoor combat and is one of the game’s larger core maps.
Breebergh Hotel
Breenbergh Hotel is set in a five-star hotel in an evacuated Downtown Amsterdam, supporting medium-range gunfights.
Mercado Las Almas
Suited for aggressive up-in-your-face gameplay, Mercardo Las Almas features a marketplace set in Mexico.
The vibrant and colorful map is smaller, emphasizing short-range engagements.
Marina Bay Grand Prix
As the name implies, Marina Bay Grand Prix map is a mid-range map in the middle of a Formula 1 race track in Singapore.
Infinity Ward revealed Grand Prix at CDL Champs 2022.
Oilfield
Again, the name of this map is self-explanatory as it seems to be set in a desert oil refinery.
Thanks to another leaked image, it seems as though large, circular refineries dot the map, each with scaffolding that players can presumably walk across.
Farm 18
Inspired by Modern Warfare 2019 map Shoot House, Farm 18 is built around a training facility set in an undisclosed location.
ActivisionMany of the biggest maps in Modern Warfare 2 are sure to feature a range of vehicles.
Battle Maps in Modern Warfare 2
Sa’id
As one of the larger maps in Modern Warfare 2, Sa’id has been described as an urban combat area. There’s a good chance we see plenty of room for vehicular combat
Sariff Bay
Sariff Bay is set to promote some of Modern Warfare 2’s new water and swimming mechanics. Set near a large body of water in a fishing village, expect to get your feet wet on this large-scale map.
Returning maps to expect in Modern Warfare 2
As we’re still a few months out from launch, there’s plenty of time left for new additions to be locked in. Call of Duty Next confirmed a few classic CoD maps making a return in Warzone 2.
ActivisionWarzone 2’s Al Mazrah map features several classic CoD maps as POIs.
Infinity Ward confirmed five classic CoD maps in Warzone 2. While they’re strictly for the Battle Royale at present, there’s a good chance we could see a handful also separated into the multiplayer component as Core Maps in Modern Warfare 2.
Below is a quick look at the confirmed classic CoD maps on Al Mazrah.
Quarry- Modern Warfare 2
Highrise- Modern Warfare 2
Observatory- Modern Warfare 3
Showdown- CoD 4
Terminal- Modern Warfare 2
A leaker who posted early images of the Museum, Oilfield, and Grand Prix maps for Modern Warfare 2 also claimed to have images related to the following maps:
Dogtown
Esports Gym
Exhume
Fallout
Favela
Firing Range
Floating Bay
Killhouse
Lighthouse
Luxury
Mountain Town
Narcos
Though most of these maps are new or were not a part of 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, like Firing Range, this could mean that Favela could potentially be returning to Modern Warfare 2 in 2022.
Rest assured, we’ll keep you updated here as further details emerge on Modern Warfare 2’s set of maps and modes.
