The market share of debit cards in Italian POS payments increased since COVID-19, although the share of cash was still relatively high. Although cash made up 27 percent of all in-store payments in Italy in 2021 – and had declined significantly from a market share of nearly 60 percent in 2019, one of the highest cash market shares in Europe that year – it was not far off from the market share of debit cards. The source expects cash will still be used relatively often in Italy in the near future, but adds that mobile wallets are also to become more popular. Italians used Google Pay relatively often in stores or restaurants in 2021, for example, more so than consumers from other countries.
