In 2023, around 51 percent of the population in South Korea had no religion, while about 20 percent of the population followed Protestantism. According to a previous study, the domestic religious population seemed to decrease over time after it peaked in 2005 with almost 25 million people. When comparing such people by age, another downward trend was noticeable. Younger age groups tended to be less religious than older age groups. Most religious people in South Korea participated in religious activities every week. According to a survey conducted in 2020, the general opinion was that religious organizations should have a positive impact on society. Most respondents answered that religious groups should organize various community service activities, closely followed by protecting the socially vulnerable. On the other hand, the majority of respondents identified authoritarianism and corruption as the current problems of organized religion in the country.
